Security Fencing

Palisade, Paladin or weld mesh fencing: which is right for your site?

The right security fence depends on what you are protecting, how determined the threat is, and how the fence needs to look. Here is a simple guide to the types we see most often.

Palisade fencing

Vertical steel pales, usually with a pointed or three-pointed top, bolted or riveted to horizontal rails. It is tough, tall and a proven deterrent, and very common on industrial sites, depots and utilities.

  • Best for: industrial, storage and utility sites where appearance is secondary.
  • Points to know: it looks formal and can be unwelcoming. Pale shape and height affect how hard it is to climb.

Paladin fencing

A welded mesh fence made from steel sections, with vertical and horizontal profiles that give a smooth, modern look with good visibility through it. It is versatile and available in different heights and finishes.

  • Best for: schools, commercial sites, car parks and public buildings where you want security without looking like a prison.

Weld mesh fencing

Welded steel mesh panels fixed to posts. Close mesh makes climbing and cutting harder, and it can be supplied at a higher security rating. Many systems, including some with third party security ratings, are available for higher-risk sites.

  • Best for: perimeters that need a higher level of security with a cleaner appearance.

Roll top fencing

Mesh panels with a rolled loop along the top and bottom edge, so there are no sharp wires. Popular for schools, play areas, parks and sports facilities.

  • Best for: places where safety and appearance matter as much as security.

Chain link and expanded metal

  • Chain link: economical and flexible, suited to lower-risk boundaries and sports areas. Can be cut and climbed relatively easily.
  • Expanded metal: sheet steel slit and stretched into a diamond mesh. Harder to cut and climb than chain link and provides screening. Used where a more robust barrier is needed.

Security ratings: what to ask for

For higher-risk sites, products can be independently tested and rated, for example to LPS 1175, which grades how long a fence resists defined attacks with hand tools. If a supplier says a product is rated, ask for the certificate, the exact product, the rating and the date of issue, and check it with the certifying body. A rating applies to a specific system, installed as tested, so how it is fitted matters as much as what it is.

Cost

Prices vary with height, specification, groundworks, gates and access. Supplier lists for galvanised palisade give a supply-only price per metre in the range of tens of pounds, before posts, gates, labour, groundworks and VAT. A full installed price is always higher, so ask for a written quote based on a site survey.

Choosing

  1. Decide what you are protecting and how likely and determined an attack could be.
  2. Decide the height and whether you need to see through the fence.
  3. Think about appearance, neighbours and planning (see our planning guide).
  4. Consider what else the perimeter needs, such as gates, lighting and detection.

We supply and install all of these across London and the Home Counties. See our security fencing page or call 01296 614440 to arrange a survey.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between palisade and Paladin fencing?

Palisade uses vertical steel pales bolted to horizontal rails, often with a pointed top. Paladin is a welded mesh made of steel sections, with a smoother appearance and a view through it, and is widely used for schools and commercial sites.

What is LPS 1175?

LPS 1175 is a security rating scheme that grades products by how long they resist a defined level of attack. Ask for the certificate for the exact product, rating and issue, and check it with the certifying body.

Which fence is best for a school?

Schools commonly choose Paladin or roll top mesh because they are strong, have no sharp points at child height, and allow supervision through the fence.
